Scrupulously accurate evidence of contemporaries about the children's campaign has not been preserved. Therefore, history is overgrown with many myths, conjectures and legends. However, it is known for sure that the initiator of such an enterprise is Stefan from Cloix and Nicholas from Cologne. Both were shepherd boys.
The first one said that Jesus himself appeared to him, ordering him to deliver a certain letter to King Philip II of France so that he would help the children in organizing the campaign. According to another version, Stefan accidentally met one of the nameless monks who posed as a god. It was He who carried away the children's mind with divine sermons, ordered the liberation of Jerusalem from the "infidels" and returned it to Christians, and handed over the same manuscript.
